Jim started his career with General Foods and the Seven-up Company. Working with entreprenuerial Pepsi bottlers across the country, Jim got his first experience providing consultative business direction.
In 1983 Jim joined CMA Consulting, a Toronto-based marketing consulting group formed by a team of Procter and Gamble alumni. As a Practice Leader in change management and organizational development, Jim worked with over 60 clients, many of them leaders in the consumer packaged goods industry including Pepsi, Labatt Brewing, Quaker Oats and many others.
Tired of traditional consulting - big study, nice binder, limited results - Jim joined Veritas Consultants in 1989. Attracted to Veritas by the Company's focus on operational execution, Jim led a major project to improve gasoline sales for Petro-Canada.
Upon completing a very successful 2 year roll-out of new sales building practices Jim struck out on his own to assist with developing and implementing a turn-around plan for the Provincial Papers coated paper mill in northwestern Ontario. Within 10 months the mill was returned to profitability and was ultimately sold by its employees for a significant profit.
Itchy to prove his worth as an operator, Jim joined Virtek Vision, a TSE-listed laser technology company. As President & CEO, Jim executed a fast return to profits and for 6 years led the company's rapid growth and increase in shareholder value. Armed with signicant new insight on management, governance and technology Jim returned to consulting and founded Boardroom Metrics.
However, what goes around comes around, and as a consultant, Jim has found himself back leading fast-growth organizations. Currently that includes a Canadian and Caribbean leader in the registered education savings plan business.
An early blogger, Jim has also turned his attention to on-line publishing. He is the CEO of Longtail Publishing, a holding company for several high volume web sites including Foodinc.ca, a Canadian restaurant directory, Teeing It Up an extensive review of Canadian golf courses, and Front Row Centre, a movie listing and review site.
Jim also actively contributes his time and has sat on the Boards of public and private companies and not-for-profit organizations in education, research, community and healthcare.
