Even if you have been using Twitter for some time, it’s not too late to apply some “strategery” to your efforts. Here is the first step (of four) to a successful strategy.

The first step is to Set Your Goal

Do you really know what you are aiming to achieve with Twitter?

In the next 5 minutes, write down the answer to this question. Your goal need not be formal and you do not need to over think it. However, your goal should be more than “pie-in-the-sky” wishful thinking.

If you want to be a thought leader using twitter, then what is your expertise? Just brainstorm as many things that you’d like to achieve with Twitter. Remember, there is lots of room with Twitter for expressing yourself in many ways.

Now that you have a list, spend a few more minutes prioritizing. Which are the key reasons for using Twitter? You can have more than one Twitter goal. However, your Twitter goals should be compatible for you to combine them in the same account.

When you established a solid goal, you will be in a better position to use Twitter effectively. From this initial exercise you can develop the keywords that you track and trends that relate to your goal. Your goal will influence and make it clear what you should tweet about.

Other aspects of using Twitter begin to fall into line. Who you follow and interact with will make more sense. It will help you determine your target audience persona, who are the influencers that relate to your goal and how are they contributing value.

Being successful at something is very hard if you don’t know what you want to achieve.

Establishing your goal will play a major role in the rest of the decisions you make about your Twitter strategy. In my next blog, I will discuss the second step to a successful Twitter strategy.
